A common interview question that you should be prepared to answer is where you see yourself in 5 years. When you’re thinking about how to answer this question, instead of sweating the details, think about how you’d like to grow and the work skills you’d like to have in 5 years. In today’s blog, we’ll dive deeper to help you prepare to answer this common interview question, that way when the interviewer asks, you have a thoughtful answer ready to go!

Do your homework

It’s a good idea to research the company you’ll be interviewing with, and what type of roles they have to offer. If it’s a large company, there may be many career paths to take and if it’s a smaller company, the roles may be limited. Try to see if the company promotes from within, or if there is a high turnover rate. You can check this by looking at the company’s employees on LinkedIn and seeing their average tenure. For the employees that have been around for a while, have they continually moved up the corporate ladder, or are their job titles the same as when they were hired on?

What are your goals

Think about how the position would align with your goals and be instrumental in your ideal career trajectory. What skills and knowledge would you gain if you got hired on? One approach to helping you answer this question is by thinking about what skills you’d like to list on your resume in 5 years. Perhaps you’d like to be a manager and the new role would offer you leadership opportunities. With your answer, it’s important to not only emphasize how the position would help you further your own goals but also the company’s. In your response include something along the lines of: “I’m looking forward to seeing the work we could accomplish together” which would tell the hiring manager you’re committed to the company long-term.

Keep it general

Instead of saying a specific job title you’d like to have in 5 years, keep your answer more general. Indeed recommends “Outlining a few key areas that you feel are interesting, achievable and relevant to the role can provide sufficient information for the employer while also communicating that you’re flexible about the future. Because goals, interests and dreams can change, it is reasonable to present general ideas instead of specific details.”

Final notes

Having your answer prepped ahead of time not only will help you feel more confident heading into the interview, but also may give you more clarity on where you see yourself in the future and which positions would be the best fit for you. We also want to mention, a few final things, NOT to say when answering this question. The first is your personal goals such as those concerning relationships or family, and the other is the implication that you don’t see yourself staying with the company for the long term. Avoid both of those topics when crafting your answer and instead use the approaches in the above suggestions.

The classic mind games existed decades ago, who still remembers well now? I don't want to talk about their appeal but about the value, they bring to players. In addition to being highly entertaining, mind games also help us passively train our brains, and I think that's very helpful. One of those classic games is Sudoku, currently, sudoku is being collected by Sudoku Puzzles and is completely free for everyone. Why don't we try to experience and evaluate this game when the benefits it brings are undeniable?

It's a good idea to do some research on the organisation you'll be interviewing with and the kind of opportunities they have available. If the organisation is huge, there may be many career pathways to choose from, however if the company is small, the opportunities may be limited.
