Working in technology, you realize that the only constant is change! It seems that almost every week we hear about a new tool, resource, or application. Keeping up with the latest trends and technologies is important if you are already working in a technology position, and it is vital if you are looking for work.

If you don’t have time to read industry magazines or attend in-depth conferences, keeping current can be a challenge. Here are four ways you can invest minimal amounts of time and still keep current on emerging technologies and news:

Online Professional Communities

Online communities are a great way to keep current on industry developments – and even have a voice in the next generation of solutions. Tech professionals can find communities on specific roles, platforms, or software. Online communities, blogs, and discussion forums provide insightful dialogs on everything from solution evaluations to implementations. Because most communities have established experts as regular contributors, the online conversations are an effective way to quickly and easily keep up-to-speed and share your opinions.

Industry Blogs

Blogs are an excellent way to keep up on technology topics. Because most blogs are 500 words or less, they require very little time investment, but often provide thoughtful commentary ranging on everything from general computing to development. Not sure where to get started? Check out CIO Blogs. This single location hosts over 100 of the top IT leaders in the industry. When you survey the list you will be sure to find one that meets your interests and informational needs.

News Alerts

News alerts are a fast way to stay informed about new products, services or upgrades, and more. I encourage you to take a look at the alert service offered by your preferred search engine. Many professionals have their preferences set to general news and have not taken the time to refresh their settings for technology news. Also, many professional associations and online communities offer weekly email news alerts. These content curation services let someone else pour through the volume of content and information, then deliver what’s most relevant right to you.

Social Channels

Social channels are an important part of how technology news is shared and how professionals stay current. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and other social outlets provide IT professionals a way to monitor breaking industry news and interact with peers as emerging technologies are launched and adopted.

Keeping current in our industry is not easy, but it is important. Don’t be that person in the meeting wondering what everyone else is talking about – keep up-to-date and lead the discussion.

Emerging technologies are technologies whose development, applied applications, or both are quite largely unrealized, such that they are emblematically emerging into importance from a background of fantasy or anonymity.
